Which is which?
All of our chickens will all have jobs to do. We didn’t need broilers or layers, we need tiny excavators and composters to help us build rich soil. We thought we’d try two different heritage breeds to start our flock - darker in coloration (to be more camouflaged from predators), similar in size (to avoid fights on the playground) and dual purpose (for both eggs and meat at the appropriate time). One of the breeds we chose was the Barred Plymouth Rock. ‘Barred’ means its feathers are banded with color. By the looks of this little guy, you’d never know it. As chicks, an easy way to tell which is a barred rock is the yellow spot on top of their head.
