FAQs

How do I care for my micros?

Our microgreens are packaged alive in soil they were grown in and are freshly watered until purchased.

Your living box of greens will be ready to be consumed immediately or harvested at your convenience.

Light misting will keep your micros alive for days longer than cut microgreens.

Overwatering can result in mold growth or drowning your greens, so mist gently and from the bottom if possible. You’ll know if your greens need a drink as they’ll begin to wilt - mist gently and they should spring back to life. Please know that once the roots dry out greens will need to be eaten within a day or so.

What do I do with the box?

Our single use boxes:

Curious Bird has searched far and wide for packaging that is truly sustainable. While most ‘compostable’ plastic clamshells are only recyclable or compostable in certain markets, our boxes are made of 100% recyclable, biodegradable cardboard with a food-safe clay interior. They can be recycled with other paper products or composted in your yard waste bin. In non-scientific tests in our own backyard, they typically break down in about 3 weeks.

What do I do with the tray?

If you simply couldn’t decide which microgreens were your favorite and you purchased a sampler tray, awesome! These trays are essentially smaller versions of what we use in production - they are reusable, BPA-free and keep your microgreens growing for even longer than the compostable boxes because you can water directly into the tray. As mentioned above, water from the bottom whenever possible, just enough to cover the bottom of the tray. Once you’ve eaten all your greens, bring the tray back to us for re-use. We’ll give you a dollar for every returned tray.

How can I get the micros I want every week?

If the micros you want were sold out at the market, don’t worry! All of our tasty microgreens, shoots and plant starts can be ordered ahead and picked up at the market. If they aren’t already growing, microgreens will be seeded within 24 hours of your order and grown just for you! Check back to learn more about our subscriptions - coming soon!

How many chickens do you have?

Fifty - 8 Black Australorps and 9 Barred Rocks in our first flock and 27 Bresse and 6 Whiting True Blues in our juvenile flock. We’re really loving the Bresse breed - they’re gorgeous, hardy and friendly. The Whitings, while much smaller, lay prolific amounts of blue eggs! Moving forward we’ll most likely add more of these two breeds to our flock through incubation.

What color are your eggs?

While all colors of eggs laid by pasture-rasied hens are equally tasty, our heritage breed chickens lay lovely shades of brown, blue and pink eggs. As we add to our flock, we plan to keep this rainbow.

When will you have blue eggs?

Our second flock is 6 months old and our 4 Whiting True Blue hens are laying despite the cold of January. It took a few weeks to get some consistency on size - some were tiny, some were unexpectedly large - but now our hens are happily laying on a regular basis and we have plenty of dozens for market and pre-order.

What if I want to order but I can’t make it to the market?

We want everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy fresh produce and eggs from our farm, so if something comes up or you aren’t regularly in the Centralia/Chehalis area, text us and we’ll see what we can do to make things happen. You can reach the farm by text at 425-919-9990.
